Practice Makes Permanent

Many students – and some parents – believe that an intuition for mathematics is inherent. You either have it or you don’t – and if you don’t, you’re doomed to NEVER have it! This could not be further from the truth. We firmly believe that doing well in mathematics comes down to two key practices: seeking understanding and repetition, each held in great importance.

Think back to a time that you had a ‘Eureka!’ moment: a moment in which a concept has genuinely clicked for you, regardless of the subject. That ‘click’ comes from a true understanding and intimacy with the subject matter. We take a supportive and patient approach to learning math, in order to ensure that the ‘click’ happens for each student.

When a Eureka moment arrives, it is important to cement the understanding in our brains. This is where repetition comes in – where the understanding becomes second nature. You could learn about binomial expansions today, and it might make a whole lot of sense to you. Nonetheless, if you don’t see or do anything remotely related to binomial expansions for the next week or so, it would be absolute lunacy to expect yourself to sit down and do a problem set on binomial expansions!

Consistent practice is a vital ingredient of the formula for math excellence.
