Growing up on the small island of Jamaica, nature comes at you from all angles. Whether it is the vast mountain ranges or the salty spray of the Caribbean Sea. Some of my earliest memories involve countless requests for road trips to get roast yam and saltfish, fishing trips and general out-of-town escapades. This is where my love for nature and thirst for knowledge became rooted. Attending the Immaculate Conception High School did not quell the need to be outside constantly, if anything, it encouraged me to register for every subject and club having to do with plants and animals. It wasn’t just about how exciting or fun it was to be in nature, it was also the theories behind how these systems function that captured me. Eventually this landed me into The University of The West Indies where I studied Environmental Biology and then achieved my Masters in Natural Resource Management in Marine and Terrestrial Ecosystems.

To say that these accomplishments came easily would be a lie; I was never a top student, I did not graduate with honors and I definitely had to resit 1 or 2 exams. However, if the question is “Am I passionate about what I do?” The answer is yes. I understand what it feels like to become discouraged while learning a new subject and how hard it is to get past mental blocks or specific ways of teaching. It was through teaching myself and my friends at the end of the year in preparation for exams that made me realize that I had a knack for explaining information in a way that others can understand and it is THAT ABILITY and seeing the faces of others that feel relieved after only a few minutes.. that I think, is my greatest accomplishment. I bring this same level of enthusiasm to tutoring my students in subjects like biology, environmental systems and solutions, and geography!
